The design landscape has long been defined by its boundaries and preconceived notions. LINES is a defiant act against the homogenizing forces that seek to imprison the diversity inherent in the design spectrum. In our attempt, we explore the projection of lines as they move, align, attach, extend, and ultimately clash. These lines, representing the myriad ideals and methodologies, refuse to conform to a singular association. Instead, we acknowledge the complexity and diversity of the individuals who shape the world.

APPROACH

The designers approach their work with a profound awareness of their histories and narratives, wielding the chalk of influence that shapes the lines we see. This show is a conscious effort to move beyond mere questioning and speculation; it is a call to action. A collective effort to deconstruct established institutions and, in doing so, lay the foundation for their reconstruction.

VISION

This show transitions from an 'us and them' mindset to an 'us and we' perspective. In embracing users as integral stakeholders, we break down the barriers traditionally separating designers and their audiences. It is an act of vulnerability, as 'insiders' open themselves to the scrutiny of 'outsiders' and an invitation to critique, question, and demand a reset. We urge you to join us in re-evaluating, reacting, and ultimately contributing to the ongoing process of resetting and rebuilding the design landscape, creating a space for dialogue, collaboration, and shared innovation.

DESIGN

The first book, which was a collection of projects representative of 5 tenets, the catalogue and the exhibition were tied together by a custom neon red ink inspired from the carmine red of the brick structures at NID. The visuals also incorporated scans of old international projects done by NID accross the world.

LINES was influenced by anti-design aesthetics and designers like David Carson, in an attempt to disrupt the norms of institutionalised design and to decolonise the narratives of Indian design as a whole. The exhibition and the two books offered space for active participation to make design approachable to all and not maintain the image of unattainability.

PUBLICATION

The books were printed in 5 inks, the four standard and a fifth neon ink from the visual identity. Prints and tests were conducted at the NID Print Labs.

The same visual language was carried over to signage and exhibition media. The theme of overwriting became a prominent visual motif and has become synonymous with the show at NID.

The exhibition featured workshops and walkthroughs conducted by students and faculty, with each discipline having their own way of navigating the exhibition. The books and the exhibtion media featured ways to record every walkthrough as no two experiences were the same.
